BIO
on Reverend Joseph Gordon
India
juts out of South Asia into the ocean bearing its name. This
nation approximately one-third the size of the United States
supports a population approaching the 900 million mark. Close
to one quarter of India is forested, and the topography and
climate range from blistering desert to near Arctic conditions
among the Himalayan Mountains.
India’s
civilization is one of the oldest on earth as is its predominant
religion, Hinduism. About 83 percent of the population is
bound by this ancient idolatry. The Hindu pantheon includes
multitudes of gods and goddesses worshipped in many different
ways throughout the country. Another 11 percent of Indians
are Muslims. Only about 3 percent are Christian.
Joseph
and Laura Gordon are graduates of Southeastern College of
the Assemblies of God in Lakeland, Florida. While attending
college they had the opportunity to visit India on a ministry
trip, Joseph working with Teen Challenge in Bombay and Laura
assisting missionaries in Hyderabad. “Our trip to India
confirmed God’s call in both our lives to minister there
eventually.” Joseph remembers, “I later experienced
the Lord’s specific direction to minister in the city
of Lucknow in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh.”
As
missionaries-in-training, the Gordons have the opportunity
to gain ministry experience directly on the field they have
been called to. Working with veteran missionaries in India,
they will be involved in training believers to establish churches
and helping raise up churches themselves. Uttar Pradesh borders
Nepal and China.
“India
is a land that is open to the truth of Jesus Christ,”
Joseph emphasizes. “It is our responsibility through
prayer and the leading of the Holy Spirit to find avenues
to present His glorious truth. We do not go to India out of
pity; we go because God has placed a burden in our hearts
to see Indians find the hope and peace that are in Jesus Christ.”
Reverend
Joseph Gordon and his wife Laura have 3 children: Josiah,
Philip and Caleb.
